They say walking is similar to the joy of reading a humanities book. I love walking because it's slow. The pace of life is so fast, so walking, slowing down, heals us and allows us to reflect. It's already been a month and six days since Gihaeng Channel's Jeju Life. After last week's trip to Gapado Island, our final planned island was Chuja Island, known as the "island of islands," for a two-day, one-night trip with friends. Chuja Island is an island that can only be reached if the wind permits. It's a beautiful island, and it's home to Olle Trail Route 18-1, a must-walk before you die. There was rain forecast for the weekend, but since it's not easily accessible, we decided to proceed with our ferry and pension reservations. On a rainy weekend with little rainfall, Jeju Port Coastal Passenger Terminal Pier 2 was relatively quiet. The Songlim Blue Ocean, which departs from Jeju at 8:00 AM, recently received a text message informing us that its license has been issued and that the ferry will begin service on May 14, 2024. Chuja Island, where we arrive today, is an inhabited island with a population of approximately 1,600. Chuja Island has long been renowned for its anchovy fishing, and its abundance of high-quality fish, such as black bream, rock bream, red sea bream, and horse mackerel, makes it a popular destination for sea fishing. Since the recent creation of the Chuja Olle Trail, the island has become a popular destination for both anglers and tourists. Consequently, lodging facilities such as guesthouses and pensions have been established in each village. Information on passenger ships, pensions, restaurants, and Olle trails will be posted in the Description and More sections, so if you're planning a trip to Chujado, please refer to them. This island, traditionally called Chujado, is located midway between the Korean Peninsula and Jeju Island. It consists of four inhabited islands—Sangchujado, Hachujado, Chupo, and Hoenggando—and 38 uninhabited islands, forming an archipelago of 42 islands. It was called Hupungdo (候風島) until 1271 (the 12th year of King Wonjong's reign in the Goryeo Dynasty), and some say it became known as Chujado around the time it was incorporated into Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province. Other theories suggest that it was given its name in the 5th year of King Taejo's reign in the Joseon Dynasty due to the island's dense forest of chuja trees. Chuja Island, which was incorporated into Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on July 1, 2006, is home to Natural Monument No. 333, the Sasudo Black-faced Pigeon, a breeding ground for the Korean Steller's Seagull, and cultural assets such as the Shrine of General Choi Yeong and the Park Family Shrine. It is also famous for being one of the 10 Scenic Views of Chuja Island, attracting many foreign tourists. The pristine waters make for excellent year-round rock fishing, attracting large catches of black porgy, yellow porgy, and rock porgy, making it a popular destination for anglers. The two-day, one-night trip to Chuja Island, along the Chujado Ollet Trail and the Navarone Sky Trail, was the best destination I've ever visited on a travel channel. Among them, the "Navaron Cliff" is said to be named for its 100-meter-high vertical cliffs, which resemble the cliffs featured in the film "The Fortress of Navarone." The "Navaron Sky Trail" trekking course climbs the cliffs. If you visit Chujado Island, I highly recommend visiting Yongdumbeong and seeing the island's scenic beauty, the Navarone Cliffs. Also, there's the famous Tearful Cross. Hwang Sa-yeong, who was martyred during the Sinyu Persecution in 1801, was exiled to Jeju Island as a government slave due to the White Paper Incident of Alexio. They anticipated that even if they brought their son Gyeonghan back to Jeju, he would still be a government slave. Therefore, they left him on the rocks off Chujado Island on their way to Jeju Island, hoping to ensure that he would live as a commoner. This symbolic sculpture was installed to commemorate this historical event, as Chujado was the first place Catholicism took root in Jeju. Other sights, such as Horse Head Rock and Elephant Rock, can also be seen along Olle Trail Course 18-1. The Eco House Pension, which my friend had booked, offered clean accommodations, a pick-up service, delicious dried pollack set meal in the morning, and the kimchi bean sprout soup specially prepared by the owner's wife, which was the perfect hangover cure. It was even better than any other restaurant, and the food was made with care and sincerity.
