Into the Light: Tracing the Ancestry of One of the Finest Beatles Compositions

"Blackbird" has been one of the most interesting songs to cover on Vinyl Friday (episode 172, for those of you keeping score) during our White Album Peregrination. It's contradictory - it has so much to say, and it has so little to say. In both cases, I'd argue that's a virtue. Variety magazine has called the song "close to being the loveliest [Paul McCartney] ever wrote then or since", and I can't disagree. To be clear, this is a man who has written over a thousand songs. 150 of those were charting hits. He's credited with writing over thirty number 1 hits. To make the top-tier of that catalogue is impressive...but that's the magic of "Blackbird" - it is one of the most humble songs in the entirety of the Beatles' works, and yet it has the capacity to take one's breath away. Paul has described "Blackbird" as a song to encourage its subject to "keep trying, to keep your faith, there is hope." I think it's nice to be reminded of that at the moment. Happy Friday, folks.
