May 23, 2026, 2:44 PM – The Ruhr River near Essen-Steele On the afternoon of May 23, at 2:44 PM, the Essen Fire Department was alerted to a water rescue operation on the Ruhr River in the vicinity of the Grendtor in Essen-Steele. Multiple callers reported that a 14-year-old boy had entered the water near the railway bridge and had subsequently disappeared from sight. Based on the nature of the reports, the dispatch center immediately deployed numerous personnel from the professional fire brigade, the volunteer fire department, emergency medical services, and the DLRG (German Life Saving Association) to the scene. Additionally, several rescue boats, swiftwater rescuers, divers, and specialized water rescue vehicles were mobilized. Upon their arrival, the first responders immediately commenced extensive search operations both on and within the Ruhr River. The search initially focused on the area around the railway bridge before being expanded downstream. To this end, several fire department and rescue boats, along with divers and swiftwater rescuers, were deployed. These efforts were supported by the DLRG, utilizing a sonar-equipped boat, as well as by a police helicopter that assisted the search from the air using a thermal imaging camera. As several children had witnessed the incident, additional personnel specializing in psychosocial support were dispatched to the scene to provide care and counseling to those affected. During the course of the operation, the boy was recovered from the Ruhr River in an unresponsive state. He subsequently received extensive medical treatment from the emergency medical services team. Following intensive resuscitation efforts by the responders, the 14-year-old was transported to a hospital in Essen while resuscitation measures were continued en route. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead. The Essen Fire Department—working in conjunction with the Essen Police and the DLRG—remained on the scene with a large-scale deployment of personnel and equipment for several hours.
