Lukwago allowed to receive treatment from Mulago Hospital

Senior lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, will remain on remand after the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court dismissed his application for bail in the misprision of treason case. In a ruling issued electronically more than 24 hours after parties had been informed of the court's decision-making process, Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemere Ann held that the offence Lukwago is charged with relates to the security of the state and, upon conviction, attracts a sentence of life imprisonment. She further noted that investigations into the matter are still ongoing. Despite declining to release him on bail, the magistrate directed prison authorities to ensure that Lukwago is taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital within the next 24 hours for medical examinations to establish the extent of his reported health complications.
