A month after he thought he'd run out of Kentucky Derby hopefuls, trainer Bob Baffert found himself in the winner's circle at Churchill Downs for the third time. War Emblem, a colt Prince Ahmed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia purchased for a reported $1 million and turned over to Baffert three weeks ago, went wire-to-wire under jockey Victor Espinoza Saturday to win the most wide-open Derby in the 128-year history of Thoroughbred's grandest race. War Emblem took the lead in the first quarter mile, and won the 1 1/4-mile first leg of racing's Triple Crown by four lengths over another long shot, D. Wayne Lukas-trained Proud Citizen. Third was Perfect Drift. The favorites, Harlan's Holiday and Saarland, finished seventh and 10th.
