Brief Political History of Alabama

This video recounts the history of Alabama. It begins with the Mississippian cultures that made the state their home and continues with French colonization. It then looks at the different geopolitical disputes between the Spanish, French, British and eventually the US. It looks at how and why slavery became a major part of its economy, which in turn led to its secession from the United States. It then looks at the struggle of African-Americans to gain equality and end Jim Crow in the state. It ends with modern politics and the dominance of Republicans.
