Three villages. One name. Nine hundred years of secrets! We're walking through The Chalfonts — Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles, and Little Chalfont — three Buckinghamshire villages clustered together in the Chiltern Hills, each with its own story. Chalfont St Peter is a Domesday Book village with a dark secret: the infamous "Hanging Judge" Jeffreys once owned a mansion here, and he built a tunnel from his home to The Greyhound Inn so he could reach court without being attacked. The tunnel still exists beneath the village today. In Chalfont St Giles, the poet John Milton fled London's Great Plague in 1665 and completed Milton's Paradise Lost in a modest cottage that still stands — the only surviving home of Milton anywhere in the world. You can even visit the famous Poet's cottage which is now a museum. Little Chalfont, once known simply as "Chalfont Road Village," earned its own identity when residents demanded a name of their own, built around the Metropolitan Line and the Underground station, Chalfont & Latimer. As well as John Milton, many well-known people have lived in The Chalfonts, including Noel Gallagher, Ozzy Osbourne, Brian Cant, Liam Payne and music producer Chicane.
