This to That: Scouring dirty wool fleece and prepping it all the way to a finished yarn sample!
This to That: Scouring edition! I’m not an expert, and this isn’t a tutorial, but please come follow me in my scouring journey for this 1lb of raw Ontario wool from Lickety Spit Farms! You can loosely see the steps along the way: raw fibre, cold soak, scouring (I ended up doing 6 rounds!) l, rinsing (I did 3 rounds!), drying. Then I show some picked locks, carded batts and the finished yarn sample! For scouring process and ratio I followed this amazing blog post https://fossilfibers.wordpress.com/20... and used Unicorn power scour. Specs: This is a Romney x Rambouillet cross from Ontario. I started with 454g. After skirting and scouring, I had 300g remaining (~34% loss from dirt/lanolin). After picking I believe I will have ~270g which means my overall yield for this very dirty fleece is 60%! The finished yarn sample yielded 2.12 yards per gram so this would make approximately 572 yards of finished 2-ply long draw yarn! Takeaways: I don’t love the scouring process and probably won’t do it often - processing this wool start to end was my primary goal for my 2025 Tour de Fleece and I’m proud I did it! I DO love starting from washed, scoured fleece and processing from that point onwards! And you can’t beat a hand carded batt from raw wool for a beautiful longdraw experience ❤️ Lickety Spit Farms: / lickety_spit_fibre_farm My links: / yarnworxstudio https://www.ravelry.com/people/Yarnwo... / yarnworxstudio
