The clog, or "klomp," is one of those quintessential Dutch icons. It's practically synonymous with Holland, making it one of the most iconic souvenirs. On the former island of Marken is the world's only steam-powered clog factory. A block of wood is transformed into a comfortable shoe in a matter of minutes. All clogs are made following a centuries-old tradition. Wood on your feet? These shoes used to be incredibly popular because they were durable, inexpensive, water-repellent, insulating, and protected your feet. Perfect for working in the muddy, swampy Dutch soil! Today, you still see people walking around in clogs, especially in the countryside, among fishermen and farmers.
