Today, I'm excited to show you how you can leverage the power of Atom Piano Roll via Auto Fills from Cem Olcay (JLK) to drive a drum app or drum machine, specifically Hammerhead. We start by creating a media channel because Auto Fills is a media processor that doesn't generate sound. Click the plus sign, search for "autofills," and add it to your setup. Maximize it, and here's where the creativity unfolds. In this tutorial, I've configured Auto Fills to wait for two bars before creating a fill lasting one bar. Additionally, I've opted for randomization and disabled the option to block incoming MIDI during the fill. The latter choice is explained later. Auto Fills acts as a powerful tool, but it needs a partner in crime—a drum app or machine. In this case, let's choose Hammerhead. Create an Audio Unit (AU) Channel for Hammerhead, adjust the volume, and disable the sequencer since we're not using Hammerhead's internal sequencer. To establish the connection between Auto Fills and Hammerhead, open Auto Fills, go to Settings - Template, and select Hammerhead. This ensures that Auto Fills is ready to communicate with Hammerhead seamlessly. Now, when you trigger Auto Fills, it generates exciting drum fills in Hammerhead, creating a dynamic rhythm for your music. The setup is straightforward and delivers impressive results. But what if we want to take it a step further? In this tutorial, Leo introduces Atom Piano Roll to the mix. By creating another node and adding Atom Piano Roll, you can explore new possibilities. You can either connect Atom Piano Roll directly to Hammerhead or link it to Auto Fills, enabling both to contribute to your musical masterpiece.
