That should matter. Ford builds vehicles, employs thousands of people, supports a vast dealer network and deals directly with the realities of customer demand, manufacturing costs, discounts, fleet sales and falling residual values. Yet many of the loudest voices insisting the mandate is working have never sold a car, valued a part exchange, stocked an EV, financed a forecourt or suffered the financial consequences when electric cars fail to sell. From inside the policy bubble, everything apparently looks wonderful. Targets are being met. EV registrations are growing. The transition is supposedly on track. But what is actually happening behind the headline figures? Are manufacturers being forced to discount cars to hit artificial targets? Are vehicles being pushed into fleet and pre-registration channels? Are dealers being left with depreciating stock? Are used EV values being damaged by incentives and heavy new-car discounts? And most importantly, are customers genuinely choosing electric cars in sufficient numbers — or is the market being manipulated to create the appearance of success? In this video, I examine the growing divide between the people working inside the motor trade and the commentators, lobbyists and policy advocates telling everyone that the EV mandate is working perfectly.
