Softball Drills for Infielders - Criss Cross Infield Drill

Criss Cross Infield Drill: This is a great drill to warm up your players and help develop their ground ball fielding skills and making accurate throws, through a lot of repetition. * Setup of Drill: Divide your players into 2 groups and have one group line up behind 2nd base position and the other group line up behind the Short Stop position. Have two coaches ready to hit ground balls directly in front of those groups on their respective foul lines. Have 2 other coaches or other players, one on 1st base and the other on 3rd base. Optional - Have a empty bucket beside each coach/player. * Step 1: Have one coach start hitting ground balls to their players in front of them. As soon as one coach hits the ball, the other coach should hit ground balls to the group in front of them. The balls should be hit right after each other, so the balls being hit, look like they are criss crossing each other. * Step 2: One players at a time, should be field the ground ball and throwing to the coach on the base. The Short Stop side of players will throw to 1st base coach and 2nd base side of players will throw to 3rd base coach. * Step 3: Players will keep going one at a time, fielding the ground balls and throwing to coach. When coach receives the balls, he puts the balls in the empty bucket beside them. When the coaches hitting the balls, runs out of balls. A player will take the bucket to the coaches hitting the ground balls, and start over. After a couple reps, have the Short Stop line, switch with the 2nd base line. After you’ve gone a couple times, coaches can start hitting the balls to their backhand and then forehand to work on fielding different types of hit ground balls. * This is a great drill to get your players warmed up, to work on proper fielding and throwing mechanics. Great drill to get in a lot of ground ball repetition. I also use this drill when I run tryouts.
