Functionally similar ignition electrodes are used in combustion systems. The ignition voltage generated by the ignition coil and ignition contact (ignition contact – now known as the electronic ignition system) is transmitted to the spark plugs via the spark plug cables. There, the ignition spark generated by the ignition voltage jumps between a ceramic-insulated center electrode and a ground electrode fixed to the mounting thread, thus starting the combustion process. Since around 1989, some automobile manufacturers have switched to generating the ignition voltage electronically directly at the spark plugs (so-called "single-spark ignition coils"). On the one hand, this increases system costs because separate electronics integrated into the spark plug connector are required for each spark plug. On the other hand, it eliminates the need to install high-voltage cables in the engine compartment, which significantly simplifies engine design (no more risk of arcing, significantly less electromagnetic interference, and improved reliability). The spark plug should reach its self-cleaning temperature of between 360 and 850 °C as quickly as possible. Self-cleaning prevents short circuits or a shortening of the spark gap between the electrodes by burning off combustion residues. The length of the insulator base surrounding the center electrode determines the thermal value of a spark plug. With a short insulator base, heat can be quickly dissipated via the thread to the cooled cylinder head. This is referred to as a "cold" plug with a low thermal value. These are used for highly stressed engines. Spark plugs must be matched to the respective engine with their thermal values. If the spark plug is too "cold," the malfunction described above can occur. If, on the other hand, the spark plug is too "warm," the electrodes burn too quickly. Electronically controlled spark plugs are no longer subject to significant wear.
