The Yamaguchi Line is a local line connecting Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. This report covers a journey on the Yamaguchi Line from Nabekura Station to Tsuwano Station. Nabekura Station is located in Ato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is home to numerous tourist apple orchards. However, it suffered significant damage in the 2013 Yamaguchi-Shimane heavy rains. Leaving Tokusa Station, you'll find "Tokusa S," a popular photo spot for railway enthusiasts. The Shirai Tunnel beyond Funahirayama Station is the second longest tunnel on the Yamaguchi Line, measuring 1,555 meters. Tsuwano Station is located in Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture, a town known as "Little Kyoto" in the San'in region that retains the atmosphere of an old castle town. In front of Tsuwano Station, there is an exhibition of steam locomotive SL D51 No. 194 and a turntable. In addition to serving as a means of transportation for daily life and as a tourist route, the Yamaguchi Line also serves as a detour route in the event of a large-scale disaster.
