Alessandro Barbero tells the story of Cola di Rienzo, an ambitious reformer of 14th-century Rome, through the direct testimony of the Anonimo Romano, a chronicler of the time. Barbero describes how, in a city marked by the absence of the Pope and the violent domination of the barons, Cola di Rienzo – starting from humble origins – manages to win popular favor and establish a city government inspired by the municipalities of northern Italy. His dream is to restore ancient glory to Rome, limit the power of aristocratic families and give a voice to the citizens. However, after an initial phase of enthusiasm and reforms, Cola loses the support of the people and the authorities, ending up tragically assassinated.
