In 2019, major reinforcement work at Bonaire’s famous Salt Pier caused many of its iconic sponges and marine life to be torn from the pilings and dropped to the seafloor. For divers around the world, it was heartbreaking. But that was only the beginning of the story. Working together, STINAPA and Cargill launched an incredible sponge reattachment project with guidance from diving legend Dee Scarr. Doreen and I were honored to join the effort and help restore one of Bonaire’s most celebrated underwater ecosystems. Years later, after battling extreme ocean temperatures, the sponges are finally making a dramatic comeback.
