Household Circuits - Chapter 9 Physics, Class 10 ICSE
Electricity travels a long way from the power station to reach our homes. It is first generated and then its voltage is increased so it can travel over long distances without losing much energy as heat. Once it reaches our city, transformers step the voltage back down to a safe level for household use. The power is then brought into our homes using three main wires: the live wire that brings the electricity in, the neutral wire that completes the path back to the source, and the earth wire which is there strictly for safety. Inside our homes, the wiring is typically set up using a ring system, where all our electrical devices are connected in parallel. This is a very smart design because it ensures every single appliance gets the full voltage it needs to work efficiently. More importantly, a parallel connection means that every device operates independently. If you switch off the television or if a light bulb accidentally breaks, it will not stop the ceiling fan or the refrigerator from working. Because electricity can be dangerous, our household circuits are packed with clever safety features. Fuses act as guards that automatically melt and cut off the power if too much electricity flows through the circuit, which helps prevent electrical fires. We also use earthing and three-pin plugs to protect ourselves from electric shocks. If a metal appliance gets damaged and becomes electrically charged, the earth wire safely directs that dangerous current straight into the ground. Finally, all these wires are strictly colour-coded so people always know exactly which wire does what. Class 10 Physics Chapters: Ch. 1: Force: • Force - Physics in Motion - Chapter 1 Phys...
