Journey to the unknown

For symphonic wind band. Grade: 3 Commissioned by Hatlehol Skolekorps. The title "JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN" carries a dual meaning. On one level, the music is programmatic, with cinematic-like themes portraying a dramatic journey to an unfamiliar place. On another, there is a pedagogical goal: to provide young musicians with an accessible first encounter with the irregular time signature of 7/8. The work unfolds in four connected sections. The opening is a calm, chorale-like passage, establishing the modal sound world of F Aeolian. An abrupt shift in tempo launches the second section, introducing 7/8 meter for the first time. Here, the pulse alternates between 4/4 and 7/8, creating an unnerving yet exciting character driven by nimble upper winds, juxtaposed with heavy brass and percussion. The third section is melancholic and contemplative, featuring several interwoven melodic lines against an atmospheric background. The final section revisits the alternating meters of 4/4 and 7/8, building momentum through an accelerated tempo. Melodic lines from the first section reappear at a higher tempo and with a more rhythmic pulse, bringing the work to an uplifting close. This work is composed without the aid of AI.
