According to data from the Central Bank, Serasa (a Brazilian credit bureau), and the Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism, the scenario of default among Brazilian families reached between 30% and 50% of the adult population by April 2026. High interest rates, excessive credit offers from the financial market, and a lack of information about debt rollover help explain indebtedness and default, but the causes are also related to social circumstances and the structural conditions of consumption among Brazilian families, according to Professor Ana Rosa Ribeiro de Mendonça, from the Institute of Economics (IE) at Unicamp. Mendonça is the guest on the Analisa program, which also discusses the alternatives offered by public debt renegotiation policies, such as the Desenrola 2 program.
