Què significa el mur de la Plaça de la Palmera? | Va passar aquí

In the Plaza de la Palmera there is a park that was built thanks to the neighborhood struggle. Paquita López, secretary of the Association of Neighbors of the Palmera Center, explains to Va pasa aquí that in the 70s in this area there were almost only “old factories” and some “low houses”. For this reason, the neighborhood requested “the construction of a park, to have a garden area where children could play”. The wings of the dove López points out that “with the railroad crossings they made petanque courts and, in this way, the children would go down with their parents and it was a lot of work” to have the park built. In the early 80s, López points out, the construction of the park and the pergola, which is used, above all, for musical events, began. López points out that when the park was inaugurated, people asked Mayor Pasqual Maragall what the meaning of the wall was. Then, López recalls, they were explained the symbolism of the dove and the contrast between the desert and the oasis. He adds that, however, it is only understood when you look from above, and then you can see “the wings of the bird” and “the stones that symbolize the rays of the sun”. López highlights that people come from Japan to see the wall because it is by a well-known sculptor, the American Richard Serra. Changes to the square López points out that initially they did not have the playground, which was built later. At that time “there was only the wall, completely deserted, with the back part”. He highlights that the palm tree is the symbol of the square, although it is not the original one, which was 104 years old and was removed due to a plague of the weevil beetle. According to López, the Palmera Square “embodies the neighborhood struggle to achieve the well-being of our children and grandchildren and of the neighbors who come”.
