Eyüp Sultan In Istanbul.Mystics, Poets And Warriors Who Came To Constantinople

Some neighborhoods are built around a market, some around a port. Eyüp is built around a grave. When Abu Ayyub al-Ansari — the Prophet's host in Medina, his standard-bearer in old age — fell outside the walls of Constantinople in the 670s, he asked to be buried as close to the city as possible. Eight centuries later the Ottomans found him, and everything that followed — the mosque, the madrasas, the cypress-shaded cemetery climbing the hill — grew around that single wish. Walk down Zalpaşa Caddesi and the seventh century keeps you company. Behind an iron grille in a small garden lies the tomb of Ebu Derda — the merchant of Medina who gave up his trade for worship when Islam came to him, taught the Qur'an to a generation in Damascus, and served as its judge under the Caliph Umar. The chroniclers record that he died in Damascus around 652, and shrines in Üsküdar and Konya also claim his memory — this cut-stone tomb, restored by Mahmud II, its six-line inscription still crisp above the door, is a maqam: not where he lies, but where a city refused to let go of him. A little further rests Hz. Edhem, honored by tradition as a Companion who came with the first Arab armies to these walls — though some historians suggest the grave belongs to a dervish who died eight centuries later, in 1460. It hardly matters to the old women who pause here to pray; in Eyüp, sanctity has never waited for footnotes. Between the two tombs stand the great mosques of Zal Mahmud Pasha and Cezeri Kasım Pasha, and the quiet courtyards of old seminaries where students once memorized the same texts these men carried in their chests from Medina. And everywhere, the graves. Viziers beside poets, sultans beside calligraphers, all of them wanting only one thing: to lie near the old man from Medina. The turbaned headstones lean into each other like men in quiet conversation, and the cypresses do what cypresses have always done here — point upward. In Eyüp, death is not an ending. It is an address. And everyone wanted to live in this neighborhood. #EyupSultan #Istanbul #Turkey #OttomanEmpire #Constantinople #IslamicHistory #TravelDocumentary #HiddenIstanbul #OttomanHistory #TurkeyTravel #HistoricIstanbul #TravelVlog #History #HiddenPlaces #OttomanArchitecture
