A detailed explanation of the Guide/Canadian Stroke
The Canadian/Guide/Knifed J stroke is the most relaxing and efficient way of steering a canoe. I'm demonstrating the subtle technique required to master this stroke. Much of the important stuff that needs to be done happens underwater so that makes it hard to see. By placing a canoe on a stand, I can show what the paddle would be doing underwater but in plain view. The biggest advantage to this stroke is that requires very little effort during the recovery phase. That gives the muscles in your arms a chance to relax. It is also great for being able to keep pace with a bow paddler when paddling tandem, no matter what speed the person in the bow is paddling.
