Kindle Cover Tutorial

This Freebie Friday we are doing something a little different.... Instead of finding a free pattern, I decided I would try my hand at developing my own tutorial for you all!!! 😱 So without further ado, I present to you all The Sewing Hub's very FIRST tutorial.... a Kindle Cover 😍😍😍 This month we are stepping outside of our comfort zone, and making my own tutorial is WAY OUTSIDE that zone for me. But this is something that has been requested in the group, and I needed one too so I thought you know what let's DO THIS 💪💪💪 Here's the details: Materials- *Inner padding: 8” x 11¼” of pellon foam, or make your own padding by using extra firm interfacing and some scrap fabrics like fleece, flannel, or felt. *Outer cover fabric: 9¼” x 12¼” *Inner cover fabric: 6½” x 9¼” (2) *8” x 11¼” lightweight fusible interfacing *¼” elastic Steps- 1- If you are not using foam for your padding prep your padding piece by laying at least 2 layers of fabric ontop of a 8” x 11 ¼” piece of extra firm interfacing. Quilt the fabric together. 2- Round the corners of the padding piece. You don’t need to do this step right now if you don’t want to as we will be trimming the padding piece later. 3- Lay the iron on inner facing so the bumpy side is together with the WRONG side of your outer cover fabric piece. Iron them together. 4- Now take one of your inner cover pieces and lay your e-reader in the middle of it. Trace around the e-reader making sure there is at least a ½” around the e-reader and the edges of the fabric. We will use this outline to judge the best placement for our elastic. 5- Measure out and mark elastic placement. I measured 3” in from the edge of my fabric and marked for the top of my elastic piece. Then I measured 3” down the side to make the bottom edge of my elastic. Do this for both top elastic pieces. 6- For the bottom elastic pieces, I measured 3” in and 3.5” up. Do this for both bottom elastic pieces. 7- Check your elastic placement using your e-reader to make sure you like how it is sitting. Adjust as needed. 8- Measure the length between the elastic markings to know how long to cut your elastic pieces. Mine turned out to be 4” each. 9- Pin your elastic pieces in place and baste to your inner cover piece. 10- Take your second inner cover piece and fold over the long edge ¼” towards the wrong side. Finger press or press using an iron. 11- Take your outer cover piece and with right side facing up measure 1 ½” over from the left side of your fabric. Using the remaining elastic place it along this measurement going from top to bottom. The elastic should be within a ¼” of the raw edges of your fabric. If it’s not cut a longer piece. 12- Baste the elastic to the front of your outside cover. 13-With the outside cover piece right side up lay the inner cover piece right sides together aligning the right raw edges. 14- Place the inner cover that has the elastic basted on right sides together with the outside cover piece aligning the left raw edges. The two inner pieces will overlap and the fold you pressed into the nonelastic inner piece will be folded up and sandwiched between the inner and outer cover pieces. 15- Using a ½” seam allowance sew all the way around the cover. 16- Turn the cover right sides out through the pocket that is now the inner cover pieces making sure to push the corners out. 17- Press the cover flat making sure the fold of the inner cover piece overlaps the raw edge of the other inner cover piece. 18- Trim up the padding piece as needed. 19- Insert the padding piece into the pocket of the inner cover. 20- Make sure that the fold is overlapping the raw edge of the other inner cover piece edge stitch along the fold. 21- Topstitch ⅛” around the entire cover if you would like.
