Furthermore, during times when the nation was suffering from war, they were more active and proactive patriots, activists, and thinkers than anyone else. Who knows the effort and hardship these women endured, having to spend years cultivating themselves and building their culture, not only in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and singing, but also in becoming first-class gisaengs more famous than today's celebrities? Who knows the pain of these women who lived their entire lives with aching hearts, thinking of the one person they loved? Unlike the women who hid in their inner rooms during the era of war, who stood at the forefront of the battlefield, leading people, using their striking looks to seduce enemy commanders, extracting intelligence, and attempting assassinations—who knows their courage?
