Song Info Artist: Pearl Jam Source: Ten (Album, 1991) Genre: Grunge Prior to the formation of Pearl Jam, guitarist Andrew Gossard had written the music for what would become ‘Alive’ for his previous band Mother Love Bone. However, it wasn’t until the addition of Vedder ’s signature baritone vocals and poignant lyrics that the song as we know it today was born. ‘Alive’ went on to become one of the biggest hits off their debut album Ten. The early ‘90s saw a surge in popularity of grunge music, with Pearl Jam at the forefront of this movement alongside contemporaries such as Nirvana and Alice in Chains. They achieved a notable amount of commercial success, stemming from their debut album, which remained on the Billboard Album Chart for five years. ‘Jeremy’, ‘Even Flow’ and ‘Alive’ helped define the grunge and post-grunge sound. The influence and legacy of Pearl Jam, particularly Vedder ’s distinctive vocal delivery, can be heard in a wide range of bands, such as Creed, Silverchair and Puddle of Mudd.
