¿Qué puede hacer el arte donde todo parece perdido? - Jimena Blázquez Abascal, Curadora | #126

Jimena Blázquez Abascal, collector and founder of Montenmedio Arte Contemporáneo, speaks on Arte en Diálogo about 25 years of producing works by artists such as Marina Abramović, James Turrell, and Sol LeWitt. With a PhD in Art and former director of the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAC), Jimena began in her early twenties, convincing her father to transform some old military barracks in Cádiz into a site-specific sculpture park. Since then, she has accompanied more than 40 artists in the intimate process of producing monumental outdoor works. A conversation about collecting, public art, site-specific art, museum management, and the courage to accompany artists on the precipice of creation. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 00:00 Introduction 01:41 Featured work: Lorena Gutiérrez, "Greatest Common Divisor" 02:03 Jimena Blázquez: a life dedicated to art 02:38 A childhood surrounded by art and collecting 05:22 Why did she return to Cádiz? 07:21 Art outside the white cube 09:24 The thesis that changed her life 11:30 The birth of Montenmedio 12:08 Convincing her father to support art 13:05 How she got the best artists to say yes 14:14 Marina Abramović and the first big names 15:48 What did she offer the artists? 16:44 The arrival of Marina Abramović 18:41 Learning to say "no" is also a form of support 19:57 Why do we find it hard to accept criticism? 21:22 James Turrell and the work that took seven years to complete 22:39 Second Wind: an experience that transforms the viewer 24:40 More than 40 artists changed a territory 25:56 What is the real purpose of culture? 27:28 The biggest challenge of building Montenmedio 28:54 Investing in artists before they were famous 31:05 Art can give spaces a second life 34:03 How to bring contemporary art closer to the public 36:42 The story of the fax machine with Sol LeWitt 37:47 From the Andalusian countryside to MoMA PS1 in New York 39:56 The challenge of directing the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art 42:17 When success also comes at a cost 43:18 Transforming a museum from within 47:25 What managing more than 100 people taught her 48:28 The artist's fear and the role of institutions 49:12 The real reason she left the museum 51:52 Culture at the World Economic Forum in Davos 53:18 Museums as spaces of hope 55:06 Imagination can change the world 55:52 What's next for Jimena Blázquez? 56:21 Farewell _____________________________________________________________________________________ 🖼️ Exhibition of artwork: Lorena Gutiérrez Camejo — 'Greatest Common Divisor' Installation (Two acrylic paintings on canvas, 100cm x 73cm each, military jacket, presidential guayabera, and military medals) 2024.
