When we walk down the supermarket aisle, one product that has its own niche is laundry detergent. You'll see shelves upon shelves of soaps and detergents, with countless versions of each product to choose from. From extra-strength to antibacterial to fresh lemon scents, detergents, used as cleaning agents, have become a staple item purchased monthly. Soapmaking began in Europe around 700 AD, but it remained a luxury item for thousands of years, until a French scientist discovered how to make inexpensive alkali from table salt in the 18th century. In the early 1900s, the soap industry discovered ways to create softer, more fragrant products, and in 1916, a German scientist invented the first synthetic detergent, marking the beginning of the use of modern chemicals in cleaning products. Modern detergents contain various active ingredients such as surfactants, enzymes, bleaches, and fragrances to enhance cleaning power. Surfactants are substances that help reduce the surface tension of water, making dirt easier to remove and wash away. Innovations in the detergent industry include the development of detergent capsules, waterless detergents, and products that work effectively at low temperatures to save energy.
