Vianden (locally known as Weinen) is a commune with city status in northeastern Luxembourg, with a population of 2,203 (as of 2023). It is part of the canton of the same name. Vianden is located on the Our River, near the border between Luxembourg and Germany. The history of Vianden dates back to the Gallo-Roman era. The original name of Vianden was Vennensis. The first historical mention of Vianden dates back to 698, when Saint Irmina donated a vineyard in Monte Viennense to the Abbey of Echternach. The valley was covered with vineyards during the Roman Empire. Vianden possesses one of the oldest charters in Europe, granted in 1308 by Philip II, Count of Vianden, from whom the Nassau-Vianden family descended and who was therefore an ancestor of William of Orange. In the Middle Ages, Vianden's artisans were renowned for their skills as tanners, upholsterers, weavers, masons, metalworkers, and goldsmiths. In 1490, they established guilds for their various trades.
