Lebertransplantation als Baby: Droht Marie (11) die Organ-Abstoßung? | Quarks Doku

Marie needs a liver transplant or she will die. In 2013, she was born critically ill – with a disease that was destroying her liver. Only a donor organ could save her. After months of worrying, the relieving news finally arrived: a suitable liver had been found – Marie survived. Today, at 11 years old, she is living with her new liver thanks to immunosuppressants. But she has to go to the hospital every five years – only a liver biopsy will reveal whether her body is rejecting the donor organ. This often happens without symptoms. Quark's documentary follows Marie and her mother Tanja during these crucial days, explaining why lifelong immunosuppressants are required after an organ transplant and why rejection can still occur. And why in Germany, around 8,400 people are waiting for an organ donation and only around 3,000 receive one. For Marie's parents, the wait was an emotional ordeal.
