With a preconceived and rather unexamined notion that RCC buildings are, without exceptions, the best housing options, the residents in the rural areas have slowly started to fall for this trend, even if it means paying exorbitant amounts for raw materials and transportation cost while also compromising the traditions and culture of hundreds of years. Our effort through this project is to examine if the gradual replacement of traditional houses by the modern RCC buildings in the rural areas such as Tamankhola has a well-founded scientific and rational ground and to propose a well-justified housing for the Tamankhola area. The conclusion of this project is drawn after extensive interviews with locals and experts; architectural, structural, and thermal analysis of traditional houses; the evidence-based literature on housing practices; and comparative analysis of RCC buildings with traditional houses through the lens of ecology, lifecycle cost, material comfort, durability, and earthquake resilience. We have also recommended a few design templates including various techniques and housing principles to address the problems regarding earthquake resilience, comfort and utility of the traditional houses based on present national and international standards, research literature, codes and practices.
