July at my Northern California Cabin | Pickles, Blackberries & Wild Birds

Some of my favorite days don't look extraordinary at all. This summer morning begins with a quiet walk to the creek, checking on the blackberries, harvesting fresh vegetables from the garden, and making a simple breakfast with what was ready to pick. Back at the cabin, I preserve the harvest with homemade refrigerator pickles, care for the hummingbirds and houseplants, tackle a few household chores, and end the day beneath a beautiful pink sunset. I'm learning that ordinary days often become the ones I treasure most. Simple Refrigerator Pickles 🌿 Brine 2 cups apple cider vinegar 2 cups water 2 tablespoons kosher salt 2 tablespoons sugar Fill a clean jar with sliced cucumbers, fresh herbs, whole black peppercorns, and a dried pepper for a little heat. Warm the vinegar, water, salt, and sugar just until everything dissolves, then let the brine cool completely. Pour it over the cucumbers until they’re fully covered.
