San Francisco to Chicago, mid-flight, turbulence rocking the cabin — no piano, no manuscript, just held the chord shapes in his head until the wheels touched down. He recorded it within the year on Contrasts (1955). Sarah Vaughan made it famous. Johnny Mathis made it eternal. Clint Eastwood named a film after a stalker who couldn't stop requesting it. Through all of that, Misty stayed two things: a melody you can hum from the first hearing, and a bridge that doesn't sit until you've heard it twenty times. It opens on Bbm7 → Eb7 → AbMaj7 — a clean ii-V tonicizing the IV. Then bar 4 pivots: Am7 → D7 → GMaj7. That's a half-step jump up — from Ab major to G major — and most players who think "Eb tune" lose the form right there. Hear it as a brief sideways visit, not a modulation. Two bars in G, then Cm7-F7 walks down, Fm7-Bb7 is the ii-V home, and the final A picks back up in Eb. Sit on chord tones through bars 4–6 of the bridge until the sideways move sounds obvious.
