Elizabeth Rayner and the Haunting of Clifton Woods. 1832. Brighouse.

Elizabeth Rayner was a 20 year old, living in Clifton. On New Years Eve 1832, she excused herself from a family get-together, saying she had promised to visit an elderly neighbour. Later that night, her brother heard a screaming coming from the darkness of Clifton Woods, 200 yards from their home. Elizabeth hadn't returned home. The next day, New Years Day, her brothers found her body in the woods, her throat slashed by a killer who became known as The Left Handed Butcher. Sadly, the killer was never caught, and Elizabeth's murder remains unsolved. However, Elizabeth was often still heard or spotted in the woods by the Clifton locals for decades later.
