In the world of professional Irish dancing, there are few performers as beloved -- and as unique -- as Helen Egan. Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance is the most successful dance show in the world, having grossed over one-billion dollars. It proudly features 100% Irish dancing. Only one character does not perform Irish dance in the show: the Little Spirit. The Little Spirit is the central character of the show. Planet Ireland is, after all, the Little Spirit's dream; everything in it is her creation, and the drama comes from that creation gone awry. She embodies the childlike sense of wonder we all used to have, then suppressed as adults; through her, we are given permission to feel our way through the emotional rollercoaster of the show. Performing this role is extremely difficult. There was no template to follow; professional Irish dance dramas didn't exist until Michael Flatley created them with Lord of the Dance. Helen Egan had nothing to rely upon except for Michael's direction and her own innate talent and imagination as a performer and a dancer. If the audience doesn't buy the performance of the Little Spirit, they don't nearly as easily buy into the rest of the show. Helen Egan, whether she realized it or not, had enormous pressure on her. Fortunately, her ability as a performer elevated the role beyond anything anyone had imagined.
