Tracing My Dad • Vol. 10 • Tony Visconti on his work with Dennis Davis & David Bowie • Pt. 1 [74/75] The HD Projects presents the first in a series of four interview videos, with world-famous music producer Tony Visconti, talking about drummer Dennis Davis. The interview took place in New York City in 2018. Tony generously provided a lot of information and insight into the music he and David Bowie made, and the times they shared with drummer Dennis Davis. Each video focuses on a specific phase of Tony’s work with Bowie and Dennis. This first video focuses on how Tony came to know Dennis, and the work that Bowie was doing at the time. And it looks at how Dennis joined the band for the Young Americans album, and Soul/Philly Dogs Tour, 1974/75. ______ A personal note from Hikaru Davis First of all, I want to thank everyone so much for watching the first video of my interview with Mr. Tony Visconti. I appreciate all of your comments, likes, support and feedback. When I started this project, it was my way of connecting with my dad. But now, this project has connected me to all of you. I’m amazed by the amount of support and love you have shown me. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart. In the interview, Mr. Visconti was so great. He not only told me the story of my Dad, but also taught me so much about him and his passion for music. I’m sure you could tell from the way he talks to me. And, to My video partner, Nacho, thank you so much for your hard work and passion. You make my videos look like Hollywood movies! Thank you!! Anyway, I hope you continue to enjoy the series of the interview. I will see you in next video! ____ A note from Nacho Hikaru’s interview with Tony was a long convoluted conversation, going back and forth through the eras. It contained a lot of great stuff, but also a fair amount of confusion distractions, and dead ends. It took me a long time to figure out the optimum way of presenting the material. For the bulk of it, I decided to create four approximately 15 minute sort-of mini documentaries, in chronological order, with something of the aesthetic of the period. This first one was a little tricky because the period was short, just 3 months or so - with not much in the way of Bowie recordings or video that actually contain any Dennis. So I fleshed things out by giving a little background into how things were, when Dennis entered the picture, in the latter part of 1974. Part of that background is my mini-tribute to the genius of his predecessors; drummer Andy Newmark and bassist Willy Weeks. ______ Dennis Davis passed away on April 6th, 2016. Hikaru is the youngest child of the late drummer. Hikaru interviews some of the great musicians and producers who have worked with his late father, as well as Dennis's friends and family. Dennis Davis played with David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, George Benson and many others. Hikaru hopes to learn how and why his father was one of the greatest drummers, and hear inspiring stories of his father through this tribute project.
