Burundi: Watch them grow

Malnutrition is a major problem young children in Burundi, where 55% of young children are stunted. Poor nutrition is partly due to Burundi’s low agricultural productivity. This has been caused by degraded land, in part due to climate change. More frequent droughts and floods have led to crop failure, degrading the land. All are factors of climate change. The Prodefi 2 project which is funded by IFAD and the Government of Burundi aimed to strengthen the capacities of small farmers by increasing the quantity and quality of their farm yield. The project contributed to increasing agricultural production and productivity including improved access to inputs, the distribution of livestock which allowed the availability of nutritious foods. PRODEFI also supported rural households with agriculture kits and nutrition education enabling them to regain food and nutritional security.
