Medical Missions Trip to Dominican Republic
This med school vlog is about my medical missions trip to the Dominican Republic. ___ Last week God blessed me with the opportunity to go on a service learning trip to the Dominican Republic. For seven days, I had the privilege of working as part of a team of passionate and dedicated doctors, medical students, physician assistants, pharmacists, and pharmacy students to provide free healthcare in rural areas of San Francisco De Macorís. In just five short days of clinic we served more than 1,000+ patients, half of which were children! — Each clinic was set up in a local schoolhouse and had six stations: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, Surgery, Public Health, and Pharmacy. With the help of the bilingual Dominican medical students who graciously served as both translators and cultural ambassadors, I was able to obtain the patients medical history and perform a physical exam all in Spanish. After discussing my findings with the Attending physician we worked together to sort through my differential diagnosis and develop a plan of care. Often times, this included referring the patient to a specialist or prescribing appropriate medication. — I’m grateful for the opportunity to expand upon my clinical skills and medical knowledge. I performed my first pelvic exam and urinalysis, learned how to take a punch biopsy and suture a wound, diagnosed scabies, saw Zika virus-induced microcephaly, auscultated expiratory wheezes, handed out condoms, applied fluoride to children’s teeth, provided glasses to patients having difficulty reading, and so much more! Several times I thought to myself, “Wow, I’m really going to be a doctor!” — It was truly an honor and privilege to experience, learn from, and serve in this beautiful country and if there is one thing I know for certain it’s the RESILIENCE and STRENGTH of the Dominican people. ✊🏾 — Thank you to everyone who made a donation to my GoFundMe page — because of you I was able to truly make a difference.
