Not only did he have to endure the torment of his father, Tobias, but he was also haunted by horrific visions. He saw the rise of a Dark Lord, the death of friends, war, and his own end under the fangs of a lunging serpent. Of course, he didn’t breathe a word of these visions to his parents. His mother wouldn’t understand and his father wouldn’t care or worse, believe his son had gone mad and send him away. Only later in his childhood did Snape finally understand that what he was seeing weren’t just visions, they were memories, glimpses into a future that he hadn’t experienced. Not yet. There was a war coming and the only one with the foresight to prevent it was a boy from Spinner’s End. Only when Snape turns eleven and is old enough to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry does he finally find someone wise enough to listen: Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Through the old wizard, he recounts his visions, bringing up names like Tom Riddle, Bellatrix Lestrange, Barty Crouch Jr, and Lucius Malfoy, names that he shouldn’t know. Alarmed by what he has been told, Dumbledore reaches out to Alistair Moody and Minister Eugenia Jenkins to look deeper into the growing Death Eater threat. Due to the names provided, the investigations are much more thorough and soon, evidence of coalition with the Dark Lord is discovered. Voldemort himself makes a desperate last stand that takes the lives of several wizards and witches before he is ultimately defeated by Moody and arrested. However, Barty Crouch Jr is just a boy with no affiliation with the Death Eaters, although the investigation into the child’s innocence does rattle his father’s temper. The Wizarding World breathes a sigh of relief when Voldemort is locked in Azkaban’s deepest cell, the threat he poses snuffed out, but none breathe as deeply as Snape who finally recognizes the potential he holds. His future secure, he could now focus on ensuring his time in Hogwarts is better spent. As he attends Hogwarts, he soon discovers that his memories aren’t the only things he has retained from his past life. His mastery of potions and expertise in spellcasting are also intact. In his classes, he quickly rises the ranks among the peers, a glimmering paragon of brilliance. No spell seems to be too difficult, no potion recipe too complex, no historical account too obscure. His professors praise him and his classmates celebrate him, but they aren’t the ones whose approval he seeks. Seeing Lily Evans again proves to be both a great gift and a crushing curse. He sees the potential future he can now form with her, but he also can’t shake the visions of what he had once experienced. He remembers cradling her body at Godric’s Hollow, retaining the knowledge that she had sacrificed herself to save her son. He wouldn’t let that happen. Not again. The two students quickly develop a friendly rivalry as they compete to one-up the other in Potions or in Charms. A Slytherin and a Gryffindor battling one another in academics is nothing new, but Snape has to be careful. After all, he has over thirty years of magical prowess to work from. Becoming too arrogant runs the risk of alienating her or worse, leaving her disillusioned. For every great victory, he makes sure to falter once or twice. But with greatness comes scorn. Snape remembers more than just Lily at Hogwarts. From his first year on, Snape had been marked by James Potter and Sirius Black as a target for mockery. Every day, he hears “Snivellus Snape”, often followed by a prank or a torrent of disparagement. However, they are but children while Severus walks with decades of experience. When they attempt to slip him a drugged potion meant to turn his skin green, he instead sabotages the Marauders’ concoction causing them to break out in an oozing rash. A curse placed on Snape’s bag that would send its contents flying into the air is instead countered with one that turns all of James and Sirius’ homework into Howlers. It is a contest of novices against a master and Severus can’t help but relish in each retaliation that leaves James and his cohorts looking the fools.
