Pic du Lion et Mont Né : superbe trail en vallée d'Oueil

Winter Trail in the Oueil Valley to the Pic du Lion and Mont Né A beautiful route starting from Cirès in the Oueil Valley. The first part leads to the Pic du Lion, passing by the summit of Pouy Louby. The ascent begins through the forest and then follows a wide ridge offering breathtaking views of the high peaks of the Luchon region. The route then continues along a narrower ridge, providing a thrilling experience with its alternating short climbs and descents, leading gently to the Port de Pierrefite. Next comes the steep climb to Mont Né, which offers another stunning Pyrenean panorama before the final descent. My minimal equipment (just mini crampons) prevented me from crossing the snow cornice and returning as planned via the Port de Balès. But I found a way out that gently led me back to Bourg d'Oueil. 📅 Date: March 1, 2026 📏 Distance: 18 km 📈 Elevation Gain: 1400 m ⛰️ Maximum Altitude: 2147 m (Mont Né) 🌄 Highlights: • A varied and excellent route from start to finish; you'll never be bored • A beautiful and exhilarating, yet safe, ridge between Pic du Lion and Mont Né • Stunning views of the Luchon region that continue throughout the hike once you emerge from the forest ⚠️ Important Information: • In winter conditions, crampons and an ice axe are necessary to cross the cornice on the north ridge of Mont Né and return via the Port de Balès pass.
