BYD Türkiye yatırımını dondurdu! Perde arkasında ne var?

BYD has officially suspended its planned $1 billion factory investment in Manisa. Company Vice President Stella Li's statement to Reuters revealed that this massive investment, long awaited by Türkiye, has been shelved, at least for now. So how did we get to this point? In this episode, we examine the BYD-Turkey process, which has been ongoing since 2023, with Donanimhaber.com writer Barış Çankı. Years without a single nail being hammered in Manisa, allegations of bringing in workers from China, and negative signals from the very beginning… None of this should surprise you; because we discussed all these issues weeks ago in Oto Gündem. BYD received significant incentives in exchange for building a factory in Türkiye that would produce 150,000 vehicles annually. These included exemption from additional customs duties, the sale of the Seal U DMI model with a 30% special consumption tax, and land allocation. BYD, which sold approximately 60,000 vehicles with these incentives, never fulfilled its factory promise. The 40% additional tax imposed by Türkiye on Chinese car manufacturers, the mandatory 20 service intervals, and the Chinese government's stance against technology transfer constitute different dimensions of this crisis. On one hand, Europe is putting pressure on Chinese manufacturers with its Made in EU regulations, and on the other hand, BYD is prioritizing its Hungarian factory… The situation points to a combination of many factors, not a single cause. So what will existing BYD users do? Over 60,000 vehicle owners are currently facing serious uncertainty. New vehicles cannot enter through customs, affordable models have been removed from lists, and spare parts delivery times are increasing. There is also a separate disappointment for users who bought these vehicles with faith in the factory. The Ministry announced that sanctions could be applied to BYD based on the guarantee letters received in exchange for the incentives. However, the amount of the guarantee, its conditions, and the bank from which it was obtained have not yet been publicly disclosed. This uncertainty raises serious questions about how solvable the problem can be. From TOGG's perspective, the tax advantages granted to BYD have been one of the biggest disadvantages for our domestic brand. While other Chinese brands like MG and Cherry were hampered by mandatory service requirements, BYD was exempted from these rules. Now that this investment has been suspended, the remaining damage is significant: job creation expectations have been dashed, consumer confidence has been shaken, and a negative precedent has been set for companies wishing to invest in the future.
