Relato de um certo Oriente, de Milton Hatoum, em 7 minutos

"Relato de um certo Oriente" (A Tale of a Certain Orient) is the debut novel by writer Milton Hatoum, one of the greatest names in Brazilian literature, an immortal member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and godfather of Leitura de Ouvido (Reading by Ear), my podcast that transforms lines into sound waves. Through the sensitivity of a woman's eyes, her hometown is recounted, in a return after two decades away. To reunite with Emilie, the matriarch of the family, the narrator constructs a tapestry of memories, as threads of other voices emerge through her voice, composing the filigree of this introspective novel. Hatoum scrutinizes cultural and family characteristics, even those of himself, as he allows us to enter the home of the Lebanese immigrant family, just as his own is. Hatoum's grandfather was an excellent storyteller and filled the mind of the then-boy Milton with riches that he allowed to emerge to fictionalize in "Relato". Thus we have the description of the Parisian shop and the narratives inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, woven together by Emilie's Islamic husband. The setting is the city, isolated by the river and the forest. Hatoum pays a kind of homage to the oral tradition of Eastern storytellers. It's a well-woven plot!
