*How to Load & Launch a Sunfish Solo Without Breaking Your Back*
Loading and launching a Sunfish solo doesn't have to break your back! A dolly, ramps and a winch can make your sailing life so much easier with any small dingy. From windsurfing to kayak rigs, here is how I ended back on a Sunfish: My history on the water started years ago teaching Sunfish and Lightnings at a North Carolina sailing camp. Over the decades, my passion shifted from a Laser to the pure freedom of windsurfing, a technical Kayaksailor rig on a 14ft kayak, and recently finally back to a used Sunfish. I still deeply miss the weightless feel of windsurfing, but this Sunfish is my latest chapter. In this video, I walk you through my exact setup—showing you how the dolly trailer, ramp system, and winch do the heavy lifting so I can focus on enjoying the water. (Note: There were a few glitches with my struggle with subtitles using Clipchamp- I just gave up. I also did a few things backwards on the last two segments. I’ll blame the water mistakes on the stinging jellyfish in the Piankatank!) Key points: 1. Ramp Alignment: Line up the boards so the wheels go up straight onto the trailer, so far having the wheel on the split between the boards doesn’t push them apart. 2. Hardware Safety: Put the bolts in the car because I’ve lost them hanging on the hinges 3. Securing the Load: Strap the dolly securely to the trailer(4',9' straps) Strap the boat on the dolly securely to the trailer. 4. Anchoring: Put out enough anchor line so it will hold.(I was using a 1.5lb grapnel anchor and that didn't hold well, so just got a 3.5lb one(haven't tried that yet) 5. Dolly in water removal: Removing the dolly from the boat in the water remove the rear strap first. 6. Dolly In-water loading: When loading the dolly to the boat in the water always tie the bow of the boat to the front of the dolly first, that way the mid-strap will fit in the middle of the boat. 7. Tie-Down Quality: Use good straps, I like NRS. 8. Dolly Maintenance: The Dynamic dolly tongue tube can be easily rotated if it shows a bend(mine hasn’t). One person said to rotate it once or twice a year(just be sure to mark the top so you don’t put it back the same way!)
