It is set within the panels of a comic book with bright dynamic backgrounds and dialogues shown as speech bubbles. As for the gameplay, Comix Zone is an old brawler where the player controls the main character (Sketch Turner) as he progresses through the panels of his comic hoping to reach the end and escape before his own creations finish him off. Each episode consists of two pages. Every page has secrets that can be discovered by shredding the paper. Along with using standard attacks such as punching and kicking, Sketch can store up to three items, for example bombs and knives, in his inventory to use them throughout the game. He can also pick up drinks to restore the health and fists that temporarily transform the character into a superhero. His rat Roadkill can help discover hidden items and new areas. Turner can tear off a piece of the book and create a paper airplane to throw it at enemies, but it costs health and it can also hurt the main character if he is not careful. In order to progress, the player often has to either successfully solve a puzzle or defeat all enemies within the panel. A yellow arrow will then appear allowing Sketch to jump to another panel, with some areas offering multiple routes. If Turner dies, the game ends and the main villain Mortus takes his place in the real world. However, the player can gain an extra chance by clearing the first and second episode, which allows Sketch to resume from the beginning of the page should he meet his death. At the end of each stage, a super hero meter fills up tracking the progress. The game has a good ending (Well Done Turner!) and bad ending which depends on whether Sketch saves Alissa or not.
