Shareef Abdur-Rahim: How Good was The MOST UNDERRATED Player in the 1996 NBA Draft? | FPP
He was a member of the Legendary 1996 NBA Draft, yet even though he was a top 3 pick, who had a lot of individual success in the league, you never seem to hear about him. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had a historic freshman season for the Cal Golden Bears, and then decided to enter the NBA draft after just one NCAA season. He would become the highest freshman draft pick at the time as he was a high risk high reward prospect who the second year Vancouver Grizzlies took a chance on. He was supposed to team with Bryant “Big Country” Reeves for the next decade, but Reeves began declining quickly. So this forced Abdur-Rahim to step up; and he did for the next 5 years with the Grizzlies, as one of the league’s most underrated offensive talents. Aside from Mike Bibby, Abdur-Rahim didn’t have much help, until he was finally traded away after 5 seasons. But he would be in another losing situation with an Atlanta Hawks which featured him, Jason Terry and Glenn Robinson. Once he was traded from Atlanta, his career was never the same as his role decreased in less than ideal situations, and then his knees stopped holding up and he was out of the league after 11 seasons. He never had any real chance to win, but he never complained about it, he was available night in and night out, as one of the precursors of the power forwards you see in today’s NBA. He spent the best years of his career on a historically bad team in a small market, and today doesn’t get nearly the recognition that he deserves, as Shareef Abdur-Rahim was one of the league’s best offensive players for the better part of a decade. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
