The reportage won a gold medal at the International Beekeeping Conference "Apimodnia 2019" in Montreal for the best film on the topic: "Collaborative Beekeeping within Agriculture." #bees #beekeeping #apimondia2019 In northern Greece, on the Aegean Sea, on one of the branches of the Chalkidiki Peninsula, lies the Autonomous Republic of Mount Athos, an important cultural and religious center of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It features exclusively religious buildings – historic monasteries and hermitages – and is permanently inhabited by approximately 2,000 monks from around the world. Tourism in the republic is very limited and subject to numerous regulations, and women are not allowed to enter at all. The monasteries mainly support themselves by cultivating olive trees, chestnut trees, producing cosmetics and organic medicines, as well as wine and honey. And it was precisely because of honey that experienced Austrian beekeeper Jacek Wojciechowski found himself at the foot of Mount Athos. He arrived with a mission to revitalize one of the local apiaries, working hand in hand with Father Serafim (at whose invitation he arrived). The Athos Peninsula lies in the subtropical Mediterranean climate zone; it has long, dry, and hot summers, but mild and humid winters – thanks to which it's always green. The abundance of flora is surprising, with many endemic plants and many benefits for bees unknown in other parts of Europe. Beekeeping on the peninsula, however, is not without its challenges; traditional methods of beekeeping don't always work in the face of current knowledge about bee colonies or unpredictable weather conditions. Jacek inspected several apiaries, which allowed for more accurate diagnosis, and Father Serafim not only agreed to test modern Styrofoam hives but also allowed Jacek to make significant adjustments to his apiary operations. And so, east and west, two completely different beekeeping styles and lifestyles, met at the hive. Working together, sharing meals, and talking about more than just bees, seemed to leave both sides satisfied. = LYSON ORGINAL =
