Caprivi treason convict released - nbc
One of the Caprivi treason convicts, Geoffrey Mwilima, was released from the Windhoek Correctional Facility today. Mwilima was arrested in 1999 at the age of 43. Now 69, Mwilima was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2015 after being found guilty of murder and treason based on his involvement in the secession of the then Caprivi Strip from Namibia. The Head of the Namibia Correctional Service, Raphael Hamunyela, told NBC News that Mwilima was released on remission of sentence. Remission of sentence is the reduction or cancellation of part of a criminal penalty, allowing for early release from prison based on factors such as good behaviour. Mwilima, who served 10 years, was released on good behaviour and will serve the remaining five years at home, but with conditions. Mwilima is not allowed to travel without permission from the Namibia Correctional Services and should not be involved in treason. Commissioner General Hamunyela warned that Mwilima will return to the correctional facility should he violate these conditions. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
