The Golden Girls Are Back on Free TV - Why It Still Matters

The Golden Girls are back on free broadcast television, and their return feels like more than nostalgia. In this episode, I talk about the radical ordinariness of Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia; why older women were allowed to be complicated, funny and unfinished; and how their friendship made ordinary life worth watching. We also lost something when television stopped being a shared cultural experience. Streaming gave us endless choices, but it also divided us into separate subscriptions, algorithms and entertainment worlds. Maybe we no longer gather in one enormous cultural living room. Maybe now we gather around thousands of little kitchen tables, including the communities we find through our favorite YouTube channels. We will talk about friendship, chosen family, aging without disappearing, cultural isolation, cheesecake, gravity and the one unforgettable Blanche scene that taught me a surprisingly practical life lesson. Did you have a favorite Golden Girl, or did you simply enjoy being in the room with all four of them? Tell me in the comments. Welcome to Mary Makes It Work, where we talk about modest, joyful living, starting over, creativity and making an ordinary life feel like a life worth living. Please like, subscribe and come back soon. Thank you for being a friend. And thank you for joining me at my table. #TheGoldenGirls #WomenOver60 #FreeTV #MeTV #AgingWithHumor #MaryMakesItWork
