His work was heavily influenced by old horror movies, pulp stories, and giallo thrillers. Sala's journey to MTV began with his first self-published comic, Night Drive (1984), which featured the original "Invisible Hands" story. A producer at Colossal Pictures—the San Francisco-based animation studio hired by MTV to produce Liquid Television—discovered the comic, leading to Sala being commissioned to write and draw an expanded animated version for the show. The animation was brought to life using a primitive but charming stop-motion cut-out technique. Director Denis Morella photographed Sala's drawings, which were placed on three layers of glass to create depth. The series featured music by Eric Tallman.
