The moat that surrounded Kamigyo and Shimogyo was filled in, and town houses were built on the sites of the relocated temples. The urban areas of Kyoto, which had been divided into Kamigyo and Shimogyo, gradually became connected and underwent major changes. However, the characteristics of Kamigyo and Shimogyo - Kamigyo was an area that fostered a unique culture with a mixture of samurai estates, noble residences, and town houses, while Shimogyo was an economic center where mainly townspeople lived - continued into the Edo period and beyond. Hideyoshi reset the various issues that Kyoto had been facing since Heian-kyo and boldly reformed them in line with reality, which may be said to have laid the foundation for Kyoto's development that continues to this day.
