André Béteille speaks on Democracy of Our Times as part of the Azim Premji University Public Lecture Series November 29, 2013 About the Speaker André Béteille, Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), is one of India's leading sociologists and writers. He is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi since 2003. He was appointed the National Research Professor by the Government of India in 2007. He has authored many books including Caste, Class and Power: Changing Patterns of Stratification in a Tanjore Village (1965), Studies in Agrarian Social Structure (1974), Inequality Among Men (1977), The Idea of Natural Inequality and Other Essays (1983), Antinomies of Society: Essays on Ideologies and Institutions (2000), Equality and Universality: Essays in Social and Political Theory (2002), Anti-Utopia: Essential Writings of Andre Beteille (ed. Dipankar Gupta)(2005), Ideology and Social Science (2006) and Marxism and Class Analysis (2007). He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 2005.
